Drug abuse is commonly defined as the harmful, non-medical use of a mind-altering drug. The constant misuse of such drugs can lead to poor health and to personality and behavioral problems. Some people use the term drug abuse of refer only to problems with illegal drugs. Other people include the harmful use of illegal drugs, even ones prescribed by a doctor.
Cultural attitudes about a drug help determine whether its use is considered harmful. For example, both alcohol and marijuana can produce a similar form of intoxication. However, most people consider the moderate use of alcohol as acceptable, but many regard the use of marijuana as dangerous.

dependence means that the user builds a tolerance to the drug. When this happens the user needs more and more of the drug to achieve the same effect.
If a person develops this type of tolerance and then stops using the drug he/she will suffer from drug withdrawal. The body then needs the drug so badly that the user will seek even more of the drug even though it is harmful. This condition is called addiction. Drug addiction ranks as one of the most serious health problems. For example, alcoholism or heroin addiction can destroy or seriously damage and individuals health and personal life.
The immediate effects of many abused drugs also involve serious risks. Alcohol, marijuana, and tranquilizers decrease mental alertness and muscle coordination. Every year, thousands of traffic deaths and injuries are caused by people who drive under the influence of these drugs, especially alcohol.
