our main character is vaguely a socialite of his time, known rather infamously in his small town, as a good man. Rip just could not help his laziness towards his work at home, mainly because of his wife's incessant nagging which made Rip want to spend as little time as possible at home. At some point in his blissful ignorance, he wanders all the way up a beautifully depicted grassy knoll, "covered in mountain herbage, that crowned the brow of a precipice." (Irving, 747). At this point he begins to "see" some men dressed in clothing that gives the impression they are from another era. Perhaps the 1600's as we learn from one of the towns people that the "Kaatskill mountains had always been haunted by strange beings." (Irving, 753).Rip helps himself to some of the mens liquor, he drinks and drinks and then falls into a deep sleep. Upon Rip waking up, he had entered into a world that appears to have passed him by.
