Canada's identity as an independent first world country concerned about its citizens and instilling in them the pride of patriotism and loyalty to their country was not an automatic force. Canadians saw themselves as British and regarded the country as an outpost of the British Empire. This dependency gradually eroded and there are two important figures who did a great deal to foster an identity that was uniquely Canadian. 1887. Emily was a natural leader and was passionate about protecting women and children and making sure they had rights. Shocked at the injustices she saw all around her, she eventually pressurized the Alberta government into passing the Dower Act in 1911. This Act ensured that married women had certain property and personal rights and this put a stop to husbands who made decisions that left wives and mothers destitute. AS her support base grew, Emily founded the Federated Women's Institute for rural women and building on this, she worked tirelessly to secure voting rights for women. As a magistrate, she was concerned at the chronic damage caused by drugs and narcotics and she wrote passionate articles on the subject outlining the dangers. These important writings were published as "The Black Candle" in 1922, but under her pen name, Janey Canuck.
