Expectations of the New World

European's expectations of the new world were in many ways rooted in a materialistic frame of mind. "Columbus had become convinced it was possible to reach the riches of the East by sailing west" (Roark, 27). Coming from a very object-oriented world, many of Columbus' expectations and first impressions were based upon what the Indians owned, and had to offer. Upon arriving in the new world, Columbus stated in his journal, "We understood that they were asking us if we had come from the heavens" (Johnson, 22). With the natives little knowledge of the outside world, it is easy to see why they resorted to attributing the European's arrival to religion. The European's, coming from a background of Christianity, "Recognized that they [the natives] were people who would be better freed [from error] and converted to our Holy Faith by love than by force" (Johnson, 20).
