There was three Florentine friends, an architect, a sculptor and a painter, are recognized in their own time as being the founders of a new direction in art subsequently known as the Renaissance. The three differed from each other by age. But just because there were three friends the architect, Brunelleschi, is the oldest. The sculptor, Donatello, is about ten years younger. The painter, Masaccio, is about fifteen years younger. Doesn�t mean that Jan van Eyck, Rogier van der Weyden and Jean Fouquet weren�t import. born in Maaseik, Bishopric of Leige, the Holy Roman Empire, which is now located in Belgium. He died in Bruges. He was the first Flemish painter to perfect the newly developed technique of oil painting. However, most of his paintings consisted of portraits or of religious subjects. He used a lot of religious symbols. One of his masterpieces he is known for is the altarpiece in the cathedral at Ghent, the Adoration of the Lamb. He was thought to have had a brother named Hubert van Eyck, but it was never proven if they were actually related. He worked in the palace of Hague, but when the count died in 1425, he moved to Bruge and settled there. He was then summoned to serve the duke of Burgundy, Philip the Good. Philip the Good was known as the most powerful ruler and a patron of the arts in Flanders. He served the duke until Philip the Good died.
