Family In Pinochle and A Father And A Bicycle

This essay compares the stories of Pinochle by Mark Leyner, and A Father and a Bicycle by Richard Ford. The stories are sometimes critical of family. Ultimately, however, they both serve to showcase the idiosyncrasies and flaws that make family both loveable and, sometimes, almost unbearable.
In Pinochle, Mark Leyner tells the story of an adult son who has met with his father to record the oral history of his 94-year-old grandmother. The opening scene is in a Sushi restaurant on Ventura Boulevard. The author refers to his grandmother as Rose, and describes her jaunty attire, and her elegance and spirit. In A Father and a Bicycle, Richard Ford tells the story of his relationship with his father. He begins his story with an account of his father's ineptitude at all things mechanical. He notes the story of one Christmas, where he listened all night to his parents assembling his wooden drum set, only to awaken in the morning the find that "Santa" hadn't had time to finish the drums.
Ford then goes on to note a hilarious anecdote of the time that he and his father cut down their own Christmas tree. They cut down a tree that was ridiculously large, managed to completely mangle it in the process of trying to get it into the house. The anecdote ends as Ford throws the tree, hits his father full in the face, and then comments on his own poor judgement.
The story then takes a sudden shift in tone, as the author recounts of his father, "sometimes I think there are not men like him anymore...married for love and ...
