is the process whereby people learn and adopt the gender that their culture deems appropriate for them (Schwartz & Scott, p. 435). History has show that many cultures still adhere to traditional gender roles even as we come closer to the turn of the century. The United States is considered to be the melting pot of cultural diversity and in this country, women and men no longer accept traditional gender roles. Contemporary gender roles apply specifically to the term �melting pot� because this country is not just culturally diverse, it has become completely gender role contradictory.

Although this society has experienced rapid chance over the past forty years, we still see some segregation in childhood behavior. Growing up for me was never easy. My responsibilities included tending to the housework, helping prepare dinners, doing laundry, and caring for my younger sister everyday of the week. In contrast, my brother�s only responsibility was to mow the lawn once a week during the warm months. The responsibilities lasted throughout my childhood, but as I came closer to adulthood, I began to develop more of an identity, rebelling against conformity and establishing my own independence.
