Today, for every one of the more than 5.8 billion people on Earth, nearly six tons of carbon dioxide is spewed into the air every year. As a result of our activities, the gas trapped inside the atmosphere has risen by more than 30 percent in the last 250 years. These greenhouse gases which prevent infrared radiation from escaping into space, keep the earth's temperature warm. According to the British Meteorological Office the earth is getting warmer each year - In fact 1995 was the warmest year on record.

A lot of people say that a warmer earth is not such a bad thing: just look at the wonderful weather we are experiencing right now and it's almost Christmas.

So how could global warming potentially harm us?
