Gods Of Ancient Egypt

In ancient Egypt, the gods were important politically and socially as well as religiously. Especially after the unification of Egypt and the dynastic periods, Egyptian religion enabled the state to hold and maintain power over the Egyptian people. Laws were supposed to have been handed down from the gods to the pharaohs, and the pharaohs were considered direct descendants of the gods. Because the king and his laws were supported by divine laws, it was easier to maintain law and order and explain the concept of justice. The role of the gods also made the priesthood of ancient Egypt a major political force, for the high priests and the pharaohs alone were able to communicate with the gods. ...

when Upper and Lower Kingdoms were united and pharaohs ruled over the entire country. The Egyptian polytheistic religion then incorporated many local gods and animal deities. Egyptian gods therefore often combine human with animal traits, such as Hathor the cow goddess or Thoth the ibis-headed god.
The gods partly represented or explained natural phenomenon, items, or conditions. For example, Nut is the sky goddess and Geb is an earth god. The Egyptians were therefore able to understand the mysteries of nature and the universe by meditating on the gods. However, the Egyptian gods also represented certain trades or occupations. Thoth was the patron god of writing and scribes, for example. These gods helped people in various professions to seek spiritual protection and guidance for their work.
