Great Expectations: Pip's Life In The Upper Class Society



In Charles Dickens' "Great Expectations," an orphaned boy, by the
name of Philip Pirrip, known as Pip, lives his life and find out the many
attributes life has to it. He finds how the society treats the different
classes and how money makes all the difference in the world of a High
class/Low class society.

Pip grows up in a low class village and soon learns about the high
class lifestyle as he visits a wealthy woman, Miss Havisham. From this, he
is introduced to the effect money can have on a person. He learns that
with money, a person can have almost anything.

Pip, being in the presence of wealthy people, is influenced and
starts acting with more stature and class ...

soon be out-dated. He goes through his teens like this and finds
great differences in his new lifestyle and his old. Pip gains much with
his new found wealth. He gets new clothes; which help him fit into his new
lifestyle. Also, he makes new friends and interacts with the higher class;
Something which was looked down upon and almost outlawed when he was four.

After his sisters death, Pip visits his village and his brother-in-
law Joe to attend his sisters funeral. He feels remorse for his sister but
also feels that it isn't his home anymore and feels uncomfortable. This is
peculiar to Pip, considering a lifestyle that he lived with for years was
now mysterious and not his way. He felt a loyalty to Joe and the help,
Biddy. He feels as though they were part of him, and they were, and that
he must return often to check up on them. Promising to keep close ties, he
goes back to London and returns to his "real" life.
