Hawaii, the land of sunsets, volcanos is rich with history both of the people and their way of life. Hawaiian quilting is a unique and interesting form of quilting that tells a story. It dates back to pre-contact times and is easily recognizable from American patchwork quilting. It is an applique technique that is unique to the Hawaiian style of quilting. I have never done applique, as a matter of fact, I am still learning how to make regular patchwork quilts. I first saw a Hawaiian quilt in Maui. So what exactly is a quilt? It can be a lovely wall hanging, a cover for a bed, a lap robe or whatever a person can imagine and create. The quilt block is traditionally a block of fabrics in a specific pattern that is repeated or alternated with plain blocks to create a design. The size varies depending on what the quilter wants to create. The quilt blocks are made up of separate shapes sewn together to create a square. An example would be four squares in different colors of fabric, sewn together with four squares of plain fabric, then four more squares of different patterns then four plain. When those are all sewn together it creates a block and that block is then sewn together with another block and so on until the size of the piece is close to what you want. This is the quilt top. Women would piece together their quilts in numerous patterns, some that are well known and some created by their imaginations. Women would spend time sewing the pieces together until they created a beautiful quilt top. Then if they were lucky they lived close enough to other women and could get together for a day at a quilting bee. There they would work on one quilt, set up in a frame, and chat with their friends.
