Heroes In The Aeneid and The Life of St. Daniel the Stylite

"The Aeneid" by Virgil and "The Life of St. Daniel the Stylite" are both works concerning heroes of their respective times. Aeneas, emerging from the times of Rome, is portrayed as the ideal of the Roman epic hero, whereas St. Daniel shows his tenacity as a Christian ascetic. Both these heroes exemplify the ideals incorporated in each paradigm, and as such fill an essential need in their respective cultures.

It is therefore clear that, while the basic dedication and sacrifice of Aeneas and Daniel are similar, their respective goals differ widely, according to the particular societies from which they emerge. Aeneas is sent to build a glorious city, Rome. This ideal is embedded in the society upon which the work is based. The emperor at the time of writing was Octavian, who commissioned Virgil to write an epic dedicated to glorifying the Empire (Kirjasto.Sci.Fi). Aeneas then is the hero by means of which this glory is created.
