What I want to talk to you about today is school dress codes. Are they fair or are they too strict? By the end of my presentation I hope to persuade all of you that, in general, school dress codes do more harm than good. However, I'm not advocating for the elimination of dress codes in school policy but rather a relaxing of them through delineating their real purpose and identifying the conditions within the code that would best comply with that purpose. I will present arguments for and against the relaxing of dress codes by highlighting theories from the impingement of self-expression to preventing gang-related violence. I will counter these claims and conclude with my own suggestion of the objective of enforcing a school dress code and what conditions must be met in order to encourage ...
