The railroad tracks in this story run next to each other, but they never do meet. You could think of this as the relationship that Jig has with the American. A quote showing this is, �on this side there was no shade and no trees and the station was between two lines of rails in the sun.� (pg.210). This tells us where the rails are located. You can compare this to Jig and the American because they never meet eye to eye with each other, just as the tracks never meet each other also.
