Hiroshima Paper

As a seven year old, I was sent from my home country to the U.S. to find a better life with my mom and grandma. In Mongolia, I would say our family was very well off, but at the time, economy was nowhere near to what America had. It was definitely an advancement to live here but we as a family became less wealthy. We lived in a small apartment in a suburb near Chicago. I had to transition to a whole new life, language, and food. This transition in my life reminded me of what Mrs. Hatsuyo Nakamura went through during the book, Hiroshima, by John Hersey.

U.S. although I've been to 10 different grade schools all over the country. I've had to leave my home many times and finally we stayed in Chicago for a while. Mrs. Nakamura, for example, had been trying to find a safe area every night with her children; places like Asano Park and Novitiate. Soon the siren warnings have lost much meaning for her as did moving for me.

Although Mrs. Nakamura has children and I do not, I can still relate because when I was very young I used to cook, clean, and babysit my younger cousins while at the age of 9. My mother had me at a very young age and I was always so much older than my cousins and since we all lived together in one small apartment I babysat a great deal. Even as my sisters were born when I was 13, I was still watching kids and raising them. The struggle she went through at one point in the book also hit home for me.
