It seems that many times you will read a literary work and the main character is after something that is unattainable. There is always a driving force that seems to motivate the protagonist to obtain what he is pursuing. This motivation is the cause for the searches that the character goes on to fulfill his needs. There are many things, different to distinct people, which contribute to this motivation that sends them on his/her journey. In �How Much Land Does a Man Need,� the setting contributes to the motivation of the central character, Pahom.

He is trying to move up and become wealthier, but at the corresponding time he is forgetting some of the things that were important to him before he acquired his new property. In a way, the setting causes Pahom to become greedy and selfish because of his desire to have more.
The main need, or actually a desire, that Pahom has is his need for land and money. It seems that he can never have enough to satisfy himself fully. For example, he was living near the Volga with a generous amount of land. Most people would have been very content with his belongings, but Pahom is motivated to go after more property. He couldn�t even envision his own greediness that was caused by the time and place that he was in. He couldn�t come to the realization of what he was doing to himself, and therefore, this ends up killing him in the end.
