The purpose of this speech was to make a change in both the white and African-Americans. It was a message to the nation and those running it that change needed to happen. Equality between the races was a something that needed to happen now. They would not tolerate this injustice anymore. It was also a speech to inspire, and to keep faith in the cause. To think of a better day and don't give up. To continue having hope, continue fighting, and empower the people.

In his speech, Martin Luther King made some very important points. He brought up that slavery was abolished, but one hundred years later, the African-Americans were still not free. They were still oppressed and were not guaranteed the constitutional right of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. They still did not have equal rights and were slave to society.
