Basic Ideals of the French Revolution

The French Revolution lasted from 1789 until 1799 and was a period of great social and political upheaval in France. The slogan at the time was "Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite, which is translated by "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity". Maximilien Robespieree was the first to express this motto in his speech "On the organization of the National Guard" on December 5, 1790. These words were motivated by the desire for human rights, religious freedom, political equality and popular sovereignty without total rule of the monarchy and aristocracy. In the 18[th] century, liberty meant freedom from oppression by the government. Individuals were imprisoned without trial or due process. There was censorship of publications containing criticism of the king, the aristocracy or the church. The Ancient Regime of France also used torture to deal with opponents. The quest for equality played an important role in the Revolution. French society was divided into three estates. The first estate consisted of the clergy; the second estate was made up of the nobility, and the third estate was the bourgeoisie (the commoners). This social pyramid was uneven and unfair, particularly with regard to taxation. The first estate which included King Louis XVI and his clerics never paid taxes and owned about one tenth of the land.
