From the election of the Nationalist Party in 1948 until the political victory of the African National Congress in 1994, the dominant political influence was Afrikaner (Norton, 2006). It was under the assumed power of the Afrikaners, the self-declared ‘White Tribe’ that legislation was passed and politically institutionalized the system known as apartheid, or separate development.
Afrikaners instituted apartheid on the grounds that it was the best way to allow a culturally and socially divided country to evolve.
