Amelia Earhart was born on July 24, 1897, in Atchison, Kansas. Her mother, Amelia "Amy" Otis, married Edwin Earhart who tried to be a reformed alcoholic, but could never really kick the habit. Edwin Earhart was on a constant search to establish his career and put the family on a firm financial foundation. When things got bad, Amy would shuttle Amelia and her sister Muriel to their grandparents' home. It was at a Long Beach air show in 1920, when she took a 10 minute plane ride that made her want to become a pilot. She took flying lessons from pioneer female aviator Anita "Neta" Snook. As an aviator, she broke many records, such as the world altitude record for female pilots in 1922.
