There had been a political union between the Aragon regions since 1137, and Catalonia had been gaining economic and political control in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. In 1469, the two kingdoms were united through the marriage of Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon, thus creating what would eventually become modern day Spain. The two regions, Castile and Aragon, held different political, social and economic ideas until King Charles 1 came into power in 1516 (Imperial Spain: Castille and Aragon).
