(50) to describe his job. It flattered Mr. Kapasi to have that word describe what he deemed as a "thankless occupation" (51). Mrs. Das also failed to act romantically with Mr. Das, making Mr. Kapasi feel a level of significance that her own husband failed to achieve.

However, Mrs. Das eventually reveals to Mr. Kapasi her true intentions for being so interested in finding out more about his job - to attain a remedy for the "pain" (65) she had been engulfed in for the past eight years. This highlights Mr. Kapasi's role in her life as merely an interpreter, almost like a tool that she had use for.

When Mr. Kapasi indirectly encourages Mrs. Das to come clean about her adultery, by provoking her by asking if she is being engulfed by her guilt, she realises that he does not have the answer she was looking for.
