"A Cask of Amontillado"

"A Cask of Amontillado" begins with the narrator, Montresor, describing how a man named Fortunato has repeatedly offended him. Montresor has planned long for his revenge for the injustices Fortunato has inflicted upon him, saying, "I must not only punish, but punish with impunity" (Barnet 56). Montresor seizes his opportunity during the city's carnival celebration, when everyone is dressed in disguise and his own home is empty of servants. His revenge may have been long in coming, but Montresor has planned the perfect murder, no struggle, no witnesses and no body to be found.

like a horse following a carrot, all the while boasting of his knowledge of wines and his gift of taste, convinced he is the only one who can tell the true authenticity of the wine. Once in the catacombs of Montresor's home, Fortunato begins to cough, for the walls of the cellar are covered with nitre, oozing noxious fumes into the air. Fortunato begins to cough and Montresor cautions him and even begs him at times to leave before it is too late. However, Fortunato merely shrugs off the protests, declaring, "Enough...the cough is a mere nothing; it will not kill me. I shall not die of a cough" (Barnet 57). And indeed he does not.
Montresor allows Fortunato to drink his fill of wine. When Fortunato gestures by throwing the bottle, Montresor is perplexed. Fortunato explains that it is a sign of the brotherhood, the Masons, a society that he is certain Montresor is not a member.
