Age in England were under many feminist views. In society women were looked upon as mediocre and controlled by the much superior men.

Most of the women in the Victorian Era were lower class women, who suffered a lot. These women had very few rights, and were looked down upon society. They were stuck home doing tiring work for their family and also under the control of their husband or a much superior male. But all of this depended on what class of women they were in society. Charlotte Bronte shows us how Jane in her life goes through all these stages. In the beginning of her life Jane is in Gateshead, where she lives with her unfair aunt Reed and cousins. Here she faces many obstacles, and suffers from her place in society. Jane is very poor because her parents are dead and has nothing left for her. Charlotte Bronte's point is that to show how men think that they can rule over women and force them into unwanted marriage. St. John emotionally blackmails Jane into being a missionary wife by using God's name. If Jane wasn't a strong and confident person she would've most likely been forced to marry St. John. An example of a wealthy class woman is Blanch Ingram. Like most wealthy class women, Blanch Ingram is beautiful and elegant.
