Many different methods are used to complete competent and thorough job analyses. One of the most common methods used to begin a detailed job analysis is a job classification. There is a specific job classification system used by government and local entities, and there is a U.S. Standard Occupational Classification System developed by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) for guidance in creating standard job classification systems and titles. If a business has no job classifications in place, this is a good place to begin the task of job analysis, by using these standard definitions to define and classify existing jobs.
