Jonathan Edwards

Jonathan Edwards was born in 1703 in East Windsor Connecticut and raised in a strictly Puritan family of one son and 10 daughters. His parents were Timothy Edwards, a pastor, and Esther Stoddard, a daughter to Reverend Solomon Stoddard, an absolute Puritan and spiritual leader of Northampton, Massachusetts for 57 long years. Reverend Stoddard lived long enough to see his grandson rise into prominence also as a pastor (Hollinger).

He was ordained in 1727 and joined his grandfather at the latter's church congregation, then one of the largest and richest in the Massachusetts colony. Jonathan succeeded his grandfather after his death. Jonathan quickly showed his firm belief in Calvinism and the influence of the doctrine of predestination. There were equally firm believers in Arminianism, which opposed Calvinism, in the New England colonies at the time and it was there in 1731 that he delivered his first publicly attacked the doctrine through a sermon, entitled "God Glorified in Man's Dependence." At the same time, he called everyone back to Calvinism (MSN Encarta 2002). His generation was the second of the Puritans, and in comparison with the first generation, which toiled diligently to sow the Gospel seed, his generation had far less fervor for the Faith (Hollinger).
