Let America Be America Again

In Langston Hughes’s “Let America Be America Again'' he urges the audience to reclaim their country to make it a free place for all. Hughes dreams of an America where everyone is free, not just white people. He recounts all the misfortunes of minorities and the work they contributed to make it the `land of the free”. This brings to mind the slave trade and boats packed with Africans waiting to be sold into slavery. For most African Americans the American dream does not exist. They struggle to survive, while the powerful and wealthy thrive. These visual examples portray the severity of the situation that many Americans found themselves in and remind the audience of America’s ugly past.
Hughes emphasizes the failure of the american dream and the stratification present in this country. The fact that America ``never was America to me” is repeated three times throughout the poem conveys Hughes’s disappointment with the United States.
