In John Steinbecks� masterpiece, The Grapes of Wrath, symbolism holds a very crucial part in telling the story. Whether it symbolizes death, people, hope, anger and bitterness, and change, Steinbeck uses many symbols to represent struggles on a metaphorical level.

that the world is full of obstacles that fill life with hardship and danger. The Joads overcome many hurdles on their journey to California. Just like the turtle, Tom Joad and the Joad family face obstacle after obstacle that push them to the limits of their own endurance. The stubborn and determined turtle reminds us of the stubborn and determined ways of the Joad family. These are people who persevere even after being kicked off their farms, cheated by salesmen and merchants, and slowed down by sickness and loss. They just have to strive to prevail over their obstacles no matter how hard it may seem or how long it may take. Steinbeck proves that there is a driving life force within all of mankind that cannot be beaten by nature or man.
