Worster and Andrews

This review will be covering two books that can be considered incredibly important when discussing modern environmental history. Killing for Coal by Thomas G. Andrews is a history of Colorado�s coal mines and focuses heavily on the labor wars that ensued there. Dust Bowl by Donald Worster is a book about the Great Plains dustbowl disaster of the 1930�s, the rise of New Deal conservationism, and why it all happened. Both books have to do with environmentalism but one could argue that Dust Bowl has more to do with this subject than Killing for Coal which seems to look at coal mining from a more human and labor ...

Dust Bowl starts off with the beginning of the depression and a drought of 1930. Worster mentions how droughts were expected in the plains and a little dust along with them. But not one was prepared for the destructive dust storms that made the drought seem like a secondary problem and left the plains in economic and physical ruin. In the fall of 1933, the plains region began to be hit by a series of dust storms that gave the book and the area their name, the dust bowl. What caused the disaster to reach these proportions was the additional factor of people. The plains were notorious for drought and the wind was often strong but those things on their own were not enough to cause the dust bowl. Although he was ignored at first, Worster points out that in the 1890�s (when farmers first started having a hard time growing crops with no rain) and again in the 1930�s, Powell began to look like a prophet. Worster also mentions that if the beef bonanza could be taken as a precedent, Powell�s idea may not have prevented the dirty thirties but at least the idea was more thought out and better planned than just trying to grow crops in a drought ridden area.
