Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I, Jack Merridew, the defendant,
stand here and speak the truth to prove that I am innocent of attempting to
murder Ralph, the plaintiff, and influencing the boys to kill Simon and
Piggy. By definition attempted murder is a conscience attempt upon another
person's life. Let me also add that an individual is not controlled by
another individual.
Now, on the accusations regarding the plaintiff, I am innocent. As
I mentioned, attempted murder is a conscience attempt upon another person's
life. The boys and I were content with our way of life, and we did not
need Ralph's interference on our side of the island. It all happened when
Ralph interrupted us. ...

As for
influencing the boys to kill Simon and Piggy, the boys were uncontrollable.
On the night that Simon died, we were having a feast while "a thing came
crawling out the forest. It came darkly, uncertainly." (p.152) The boys,
especially the littluns, were so terrified, they thought Simon was the
beast, so they attacked with the thought of killing the beast not Simon.
Ralph was at that incident as well. He was one of us.
As for Piggy, the rock that struck Piggy was not launched by my
hand. The boys were bright enough to act on their own. "Roger started
throwing rocks from atop the castle while his other hand was still on the
lever where he leaned all his weight on" (p.180) without my order. I
cannot influence my men while trying to defend myself from Ralph who
invaded my territory.
Now, ladies and gentlemen of the jury my life is now in your hands.
I am an innocent man who defended my interests and was unjustly blamed for
influencing my men to kill Piggy and ...
