In �The Lovesong of J. Alfred Prufrock,� by T.S. Elliot, the speaker is Prufrock himself. The setting is somewhere around the twenties and Prufrock is on his way to enjoy some tea in the afternoon with his girlfriend. He is at the time of his life when he is to decide weather or not he shall propose love. Prufrock considers himself as being unable to carry a successful marriage. In line one, Prufrock is both �you� and �I�, which symbolizes he internal conflict with himself. He shows a sense of being paralyzed in not knowing what to do by saying, �When I am pinned and wriggling against the wall, then how should I begin�. Prufrock is a procrastinator and the older he gets, the less likely he will propose his love. He stalls by saying to himself �there will be time�(23) for �a hundred decisions�(32) as he focuses on not disturbing the universe and not disturbing the women �who come and go Talking of Michelangelo�(35-36). Prufrock is a shy man that does not take risks. He is scared of what the world has to offer so much that he says, �I have measured out my life with coffee spoons� (51). The overwhelming questions that Prufrock is trying to ask is whether he should propose to his girlfriend, but the overwhelming question for the audience is if he will actually go through with it.
