Luther, Zwingli, and Calvin

The Protestant Reformation was a European Christian reform movement that began as an attempt to reform the Roman Catholic Church. Western European Catholics opposed what they saw as false beliefs and systemic corruption of the Church�s hierarchy. Three major theologians were Martin Luther (1483-1546), Huldrych Zwingli (1484-1531), and John Calvin (1509-1564). Luther, Zwingli, and Calvin had many similar beliefs, but also many different opinions.

and controlled moral issues. They approved of strict control and a definite chain of command. All three of them advocated simple worship, without art and idols. They feared that art and idols would lead to idolatry. Many thoughts of Luther, Zwingli, and Calvin were very similar.
Luther, Zwingli, and Calvin also had many diverse and innovative viewpoints. Martin Luther was a German priest and professor of theology who set off the Protestant Reformation. In 1517, the Church spent much money to show off their wealth. To rebuild the Papal Basilica of Saint Peter, the Church needed more money. To earn more money, they sold indulgences, which supposedly erased some sins and caused people to spend less time in Purgatory, and would also sell positions and offices in the Church hierarchy. Luther believed in the effectiveness of indulgences, but strongly disputed the claim that freedom from God�s punishment of sin could be purchased.
