Casablanca uses source music to identify a scene, to compliment the character or mood, and to introduce the famous melody. Casablanca is set around a war and because of that the scene's bounce back and forth between America and the Middle East. American popular music is used to identify Rick's Café, which is in the US, while Arabian music is heard when the scene is located at The Blue Parrot Café. Again, being that the movie is ground around a war, the cheerful American music is used to compliment the mood of the desperate refugees in the film. This adds tension to the scene as well as when the Germans and French get into a singing war.
