Macbeth Character Analysis

Macbeth is perhaps the most diverse and conflicted character in the play, �Macbeth�. Throughout each act, he displays different behaviour, adding to the complexity of his personality. Each aspect of his nature features in the decision that leads to his death: to kill or not to kill?

At the very beginning of the play, we are given the impression that Macbeth is governed by three central influences: honour, bravery and loyalty. Macbeth is a highly esteemed warrior, respected and admired by everyone. He is notoriously brave and noble in battle (even referred to as �Valour�s minion� by the Captain) and a great loyalty ties him to his king and country, as shown by his slaughter of Macdonald. ...

and naivety are commonly associated with children and Macbeth�s desperate aspiration is to be the ultimate example of masculinity.

In conjunction with this, Macbeth clearly does care about morality and religion. Lady Macbeth, who he describes in his letter to her as his �dearest partner of greatness�, acknowledges this in her soliloquy, worried that he is �too full o�th�milk of human kindness� to kill Duncan. At first, she seems to be proved right - especially when he weighs the moral implications of the Witches� prediction. When talking to himself after first hearing the prophecies, he says �Whose horrid image doth unfix my hair� thus proving he is horrified at the thought of murdering Duncan - evidence that he does indeed have a conscience and moral values. He also says his �seated heart knock[s] at [his] ribs/Against the use of nature�, an image that portrays his aversion towards an act that we see later in the play as detrimental to human nature.
