Macbeth: Contrast Of Lady Macbeth And Macbeth



Macbeth is a play that revolves around a single unifying event, the
murder of Duncan. Like the play the characters revolve around it as well,
especially the main characters, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. Through their
thinking before and after the notorious event they show their inner most
character. It is through this issue that we see Lady Macbeth as having a
stronger integrity than her husband, Macbeth. Even though she does change
after the event. Shakespeare uses the contrast of Lady Macbeth and Macbeth
before and after the murder to show their individual traits.

other hand, agrees that Duncan must be slain in
order to attain the crown but unlike Lady Macbeth, he is weary. He is
weary because of the fact Duncan �built an absolute trust� with him and �
honour�d him.� Lady Macbeth goes as far as to accuse him of having no
manliness at all when she hears about this. Even Macbeth, thinking clearly
at this time before the murder, tries to back-out and yearns to �proceed no
further�. However the cunning Lady Macbeth quickly smooth talks him back
into �[their] enterprise.� During the murder itself Macbeth only completes
one part of the planned murder and does not even want to finish it off,
saying he is afraid of what he had done. Once again Macbeth needs a stiff
speech from Lady Macbeth to talk him into it anew. Macbeth�s wearisome
attitude is clearly shown and contrasted to Lady Macbeth�s strong eagerness.


After the sin has been committed Macbeth is in utter shock, and
although not sudden, his state of mind slowly disintegrates. He
