Macbeth: Sympathy for Duncan

"Duncan is a figure of sympathy in this play."

In the play Macbeth, Duncan is indeed a character I sympathise with. Despite how full of moral goodness Duncan seems to be, he still gets murdered in cold blood by one of his most trusted generals, Macbeth. I sympathise with Duncan as he is a fair ruler, a benevolent monarch and a trustful emperor towards his subjects.

Firstly, I sympathise with Duncan as he is a fair ruler, yet he is murdered by his subject in cold blood. This can be seen from the quote "O valiant cousin, worthy gentleman!". This line was spoken by Duncan, who was praising Macbeth after he found out how well Macbeth had performed on the battlefield. This shows how Duncan ...

and bravery in the war. This shows how Duncan is fair as he gives rewards to his subjects only when they are deserving of it, and not due to biasedness. Therefore, this proves that Duncan is a fair ruler, and that I do feel sympathy for him as despite his moral goodness, he gets murdered in cold blood later in the play. The quote "See, see, our honoured hostess. The love that follows us sometime is our trouble." Duncan praises Lady Macbeth highly and thanks her for hosting him and his entourage in her castle. Duncan is very gracious in giving praise where he finds that it is deserved. In this case, Duncan believes Lady Macbeth deserves his high praise as she went through troubles to prepare the castle and deem it fit for hosting, just so it would be presentable for Duncan. Thus, this proves that Duncan is a fair ruler, and I pity Duncan for he is murdered despite his graciousness and fairness as a king.
