Malcolm Little was born to Earl and Louise Little in Omaha, Nebraska on May 19, 1925. He was the seventh child of the eleven children in the family. Soon after Malcolm was born his family moved to Lansing, Michigan. There the white people harassed them because they disliked his fathers black nationalists views.
When Malcolm was six years old, his father got murdered, and his mother later then suffered a nervous breakdown, so the family had to be put on welfare. And that made him believe later in his life that white people destroyed his family. Malcolm then became a fine student and dreamed of becoming a lawyer when he grew up. soon became an active participant in the nation of Islam. He assisted Elijah Muhammad by starting many new Muslim groups in the United States. In 1952 he returned to New York to become a minister of the important Harlem temple and in 1957 he organized the Muslim newspaper.
By the early 1960�s Islam had become nationally known. He was there most effective minister and spokesman. In 1964 broke completely with the nation of Islam and began building his own organization of Afro American Unity.
He made the pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudia Arabia, to learn about the true Islam. When he had seen the friendship between pilgrims of all colors, came to believe that whites, like blacks were among the racist society. After this trip he also adopted the name el-hajj malik el-Shabazz.
