Marriage and Love In Canterbury Tales

In Chaucer�s, The Canterbury Tale�s marriage and love is placed throughout the tales. The Franklin�s Tale and Wife of Bath�s Prologue portrays marriage in different ways. In the Franklin�s Tale marriage is mutual and equal while in the Wife of Bath�s Prologue displays marriage is as dominant, power and leverage. These contrasting pictures are not to be overlooked by the similar theme in the two tales that women are powerful.

In the tale an issued is caused by an outside factor and the threat to their marriage security is tested. Even though Dorigen, the wife, is close to committing adultery because of her promise, Aurelius, her outside lover, is moved by her husbands honor and releases her from her promise. The contrasting themes in the two tales are big in that one is having an equal and mutual marriage and the other with one side dominant and holding power. But the similarity in the two marriages is that woman no matter are powerful. This can be seen in The Wife of Bath�s Prologue because she uses her body and appearance to gain wealth and status.
