Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Dream For America



Martin Luther King, Jr. was born in 1929 and throughout his life he became a very important figure to the people of our Nation. He was a Baptist minister and president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. On August 28, 1963, Dr. King led the poor people's march on Washington, where he gave his �I Have a Dream� speech. Since then this speech has been used as a model for speech writers all over the U.S.
Martin Luther King, Jr. begins his speech by discussing the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. He states, �This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves . . .� (King, 1996, p. 358). He is showing great moral character by doing ...

a check� (King, 1996, p. 358). A Capital is not a bank and therefore it cannot cash a check. Rev. King is comparing this to the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. He is attempting to persuade the audience with the promise that all men and women have the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. I feel this is a perfect example of using all three elements of ethos, pathos, and logos together.
In the fourth paragraph, Dr. King is persuading the Black Americans to believe and trust in their nation. He says, �America has defaulted on this promissory note. . . . But we refuse to believe the bank of justice is bankrupt� (King, 1996, p. 358). Also in this paragraph he wants action to be taken �NOW�! The Negro's do not want this process to be gradual. He informs the people, �Now is the time to open the doors to opportunity to all of God's children� (King, 1996, p. 358). He identifies with the feelings of the audience.
