Materialism In The 1920�s


In the novel The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzerald. Materialism plays a major role for one�s life in this novel. Jay Gastsby a very wealthy man lives a life of materialism just to prove to people that he is wealthy and important. Doing so he tries to impress a sertain lady by the name of Daisy Buchanan.
Materialism plays a major role in Gatsby�s life while he is trying to win Daisy back from her husband tom Buchanan. One of the things Gatsby impresses Daisy by his enormous mansion. He bought this big house because when he was dating her five years ago she lived in a big luxuries house. She is also living in a big house now so Gatsby figured she would go for bigger and better one.

I was brought up in America but educated at Oxford because all my ancestors have been educated there for many years. It �s been a family tradition�(pg.69). After he says this to Nick. Nick saw and knew he was lying just by his actions. �he hurried the phrase �educated at Oxford�, or swallowed it or choked on it as though it had bothered him before�(pg.69). From these two Quotations the reader can tell Gatsby is a man with no morals and must live a with telling people he is a normal person with a lot of old money. But in reality he is only materialistic and always thinks he must impress himself to others.
In this novel, Gatsby also impresses people such as Daisy by his expensive, big parties and whose at these parties. While Gatsby is telling Daisy and Tom whose at his party this night he casually tells them like it as if that ...
