Whenever there is talk about the Civil War, it almost always has something to do with the bloodiest battles like Antietam, or the best known leaders like General Lee, but what about those who stayed on the battlefield throughout all the destruction and chaos to tend to the wounded? Those courageous women and men, like Dorthea Dix, worked long, hard grueling hours out on the battlefield often without pay. They were always risking their lives tending to the fallen soldiers day in and day out and also running the risk of catching life-threatening diseases such as dysentery, typhoid fever or even measles which all took thousands of lives.

At least three thousand women volunteered their services at some point during the war. Union women who volunteered could become a nurse one of three ways. The easiest way was to join a local regiment.
