I am going to talk about how people with mental illnesses should not be punished. We see that people have reacted differently to the same things throughout time. When it comes to mental illnesses, we know that people 100 years ago used to think of mental illnesses in a completely different way than we do nowadays. Their perspective was highly diverted by the higher authority, it works the same way nowadays but back then the higher authority was the church. Their point of view of things was more religion based than logic, reason or facts. There are a lot of reasons why this system was false and how easily it could have been flawed. these things changed and now things are looked at from a more sensible, civilized manner. Now when it comes to mental illnesses, we see the same thing happening.

Before mentally ill people were treated like animals. They would tie them up to radiators, they would be beaten down every time they would get out of control, kept in cages or would be tortured. Mentally ill weren't really considered as humans and people would even think of them as people who are possessed by demons. They would be kept in electric chairs and be shocked until the doctor thought that they are cured of the mental illness. They would be given heavy dosages of medicines which weren't really medicines and were things like opium and other substances that would put them to sleep rather than curing them. but still all of this would be considered as treatment.
