Later in his life, Kafka had jumped from jobs to jobs until he had found one approved by his father and a job that would leave him time to write as well. He worked for an insurance company and was so good at his job that he was considered his employer's right-hand man, very similar to what we saw in the novella where Gregor was a really great salesman, and the day he does not show up to work on time his employer runs to his house to go check up on his best salesman, Gregor. This gave me a very good insight into the background and the structure of the novella's plot.
