Military Pay


The raise for 1999 approved by President Clinton has set off many political debates. One of the debates being focused on is compared to the civilian sector pay. I don't believe that all of the President's opposition disputes the military a pay raise. I believe that some may agree that the raise is not enough to solve the militaries' moral and retention problem. The military is not being competitive enough to retain its educated and senior personnel. I am a Federal employee, I work with soldiers every day and agree, they are under more pressure today than in the past due to the draw down.

The military has shrunk since 1986 due to the draw down yet, it has experienced a fourfold increase in the number of deployments. This has increased responsibility and stress on the soldier. I believe that the soldier is underpaid when compared to the private sector. They deserve annual pay raises that at least match the average American's as measured by the
Bureau of Labor Statistics" Employment Cost Index. The government should also have a "catch-up" raise to close the pay gap.
The Army does provide lots of extra benefits other than a salary. Basic pay for the military is low although, extra allowances offered to soldiers' compensate for much of the difference between military and civilian pay.
