The Most Dangerous Game: Foil Character To Contrast The Protagonist



An author sometimes uses a foil character to contrast the protagonist of a story in a way that emphasizes their characteristics. In The Most Dangerous Game (reprinted in Laurence Perrine and Thomas R. Arp, Literature: Structure, Sound, and Sense, 6th ed. [Fort Worth: Harcourt, 1993]), General Zaroff acted as a foil for Rainsford in the way that he contrasted Rainsford, by making him the hunted instead of the hunter.
Rainsford was a hunter by nature. He enjoyed hunting and was always on a quest for new game. In the beginning of the story, he had the following conversation about hunting with Whitney (8):
"The best sport in the world," agreed Rainsford.

Rainsford never considered what it was like to be the prey rather than the predator, that is until he met General Zaroff. General Zaroff was much like Rainsford, only he had found the ultimate game to hunt- human beings. By making Rainsford the huntee, Zaroff showed Rainsford what it felt like to be the prey. Instead of being the one to set traps and track the prey, Rainsford learned what it felt like to fear for his life, as did the beasts that he himself hunted. Previous to the hunt, he had assumed that the creatures that he tracked had no sense or feeling. However, once Zaroff began this dangerous game, Rainsford began to understand that his ideas were false.
General Zaroff also highlighted the characteristics that Rainsford had as a hunter. While he was being pursued, Rainsford set traps for Zaroff, but the human hunter knew all of his prey's tricks. As Zaroff got closer and closer to him, he began to have a ...
