Beauty, is it in the eye of the beholder? For many people beauty is an image that society has constructed and manipulated. For a long time society has influenced our views of beauty. Television and magazines have created the �Perfect� image of a woman. This perfect woman image consists of a young woman that has an attractive face, is intelligent, and most importantly is slender. Since society has treated women according to their beauty qualifications, women have become obsessed with the perfection of beauty.

Culture plays an important aspect in revealing the relationships within a family. In Maara Haas�s short story, the culture of the daughter and mother is Ukrainian. This is shown throughout the story by cultural beliefs, customs, and comments made by the mother �Me Ukrainian off da boat� (Haas, 201). In the other story by Anne Jew, the mother and daughter are of a strict Chinese heritage. The story begins with an introduction to some of the beliefs in the Chinese the culture to set the stage for the strict relationship between mother and daughter.
The hierarchical design of relationships between mother and daughter is very different; in the two stories the relationships between mother and daughter are inversely correlated to each other.
