Movie Summary: �Dead Poets Society�



The movie �The Dead Poets Society� is about a group of private
school boys in the North East. They encounter a teacher, Mr. Keating, whom
is a little different than most teachers. He wanted to instill the
motivation to look past what society was telling them to do rather than
teach the normal curriculum. He used Thoreau�s ideas on transcendentalism
by showing them to transcend or go beyond the rules that society poses and
create their own independence. Mr. Keating succeeded in his efforts by
teaching them to think for themselves. His success is shown by the actions
of some of the students throughout the movie.

few minutes they all ended up going the same pace. He had them do this to
prove that one must conform with life. One must conform with life in some
ways, but still have their own independence.
One of Mr. Keating�s students, Neil Perry, thought about all he
taught them about independence. Neil decided to try out for the school play
against his father�s wishes. He got the lead part and forged a note of
permission from his father. He was exceptional in the play, so he thought
his father would be proud and approve of him acting. His father did not
approve and was very angry at Neil for disobeying him. Neil ended up
killing himself perhaps because he pushed too hard and did not conform
enough, so he felt he failed in his search for his own place in society
rather than live the life his father has made for him.
Mr. Keating was fired because he was unable to correspond with the
expectations of the school and the parents of the students. After ...
