Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a disease of the central nervous system. It is an autoimmune disease in which the body attacks it�s own tissue, specifically the nerve-insulating myelin � is a fatty material that coats and insulates nerves.
The symptoms of the MS usually appear between the ages of 20 and 40. The most common first symptom is blurred or double vision or blindness in one eye. Weakness in the extremities and loss of balance and coordination are common symptoms. As time goes on, MS patients may become partially or completely paralyzed. a blood test, this will help rule out inflammatory diseases that may have symptoms similar to MS. A spinal tap, which would be next, will show anything abnormal in your white blood cells. Lastly would be an MRI. The MRI will show brain lesions. And although having lesions is proof of MS, it also may be Lyme disease or Lupus.
Treatment is usually used to treat the attacks that come as the disease progresses. The most common treatments are steroids. This reduces the inflammation that would bring on an attack. Another way to treat MS is plasma exchange; however this is only used in extreme conditions and with people who do not respond to steroids. Doctors recommend physical therapy as a treatment also. However, my sister who has MS, walks every day and that seems to help her keep her strength up.
