My Son's Story


Sonny is an earnest, hard-working civil servant, an educator who
once had a seemingly endless supply of concern and affection for those
around him. He is attentive to his family's every need, despite the
terrible shadow of apartheid. Gradually, though, Sonny becomes more and
more connected to his people's struggle, an exceedingly dangerous one,
which leaves him with less time for his family. Sonny's exertion to
achieve a new world for his people leaves his family's world, as well as
his own, in serious danger. His dedication to his political responsibility
results in an affair with a white human-rights worker that ultimately
leaves him estranged from his family, an immense sacrifice in ...

human-rights organization. �It was then that it began, that it was
inescapable. Needing Hannah�(53). Sonny and Hannah share the same fierce
drive to end apartheid. They are fighting the same battle. She is his
understanding. With Hannah, Sonny feels �the ultimate joy of making love
with someone who, too, is in the battle, for whom the people in the battle
are her only family, her life, the happiness she understands�(67). Sonny's
wife Aila cannot possibly grasp what this cause means to him because she
isn't involved in the movement as he and Hannah are. Therefore he seeks
discernment with a woman who is as dedicated as he. �She can be relied
upon to know the priorities.�(136). Sonny is involved with Hannah because
they are linked to a common cause. Because Aila is not within that link
she is not a priority for Sonny and therefore is wrongfully left behind.
Sonny's love affair with Hannah is only amplified by secrecy. �
