On January 1, 1994, Canada, the United States and Mexico entered into the North American Free Trade Agreement. For the first time in history, the three countries agreed to create a single North American marketplace.
THE EFFECTS OF THE NORTH AMERICAN FREE TRADE AGREEMENT
The North American Free-Trade Agreement has proven to be a pox on American Society. This agreement between the United States, Canada, and Mexico has caused hundreds of thousands of jobs. Not only has NAFTA caused American jobs, but also those retaining their jobs are confronted with lower wages and benefits.

problem. Also, Mexican workers have not benefited, and in some cases, are worse off today than just five short years ago. Futhermore, jobs have begun to flood across the borders and unemployment is still a concern even with the NAFTA resolution. Additionaly, the environmental benefits promised through improved state-of-the-art buildings have yet to materialize.

TRADE DEFICIT

The North American Trade Agreement has continued to create a trade deficit for the United States. The United States trade deficit with Mexico has continued to expand. It has increased from $1.26 billion in December of 1998 to $1.43 billion in January of 1999 (Wall Street Journal, 3/19/99). The trade deficit with Mexico has almost doubled in one year, in January of 1998 it was only $0.80 billion and in January of 1999 it has swollen to $1.43 billion (Wall Street Journal, 3/19/99).
